Integrated door-wall-cabinet design has become increasingly popular, and soft curved shapes have turned into mainstream design elements for residential and commercial fit-outs, driving surging demand for curved panel processing. Panel bending belongs to elasto-plastic deformation processing. Traditional forming methods including steam bending and high-frequency hot pressing each have inherent limitations. This article introduces an innovative circular bending process together with supporting CNC equipment, offering a more flexible and efficient solution for curved panel fabrication.

Successful panel bending relies on pre-plasticizing substrates to achieve temporary plasticity, enabling stable shaping under external force. Industrial plasticization techniques fall into two categories: physical thermal treatment and chemical plasticization. Steam treatment and high-frequency heating are physical heating approaches, while soaking with ammonia water or tannic acid represents chemical plasticization.
Core logic of physical heating: Wood fibre elastic modulus drops sharply upon heating, softening panels for easy bending. Bending processing must be carried out immediately after plasticization to avoid loss of plasticity due to cooling. Post-forming sufficient drying and setting are required to prevent springback and shape distortion.
Steam duration increases proportionally with panel thickness, requiring one hour for every 25–30 mm thickness. Precise control of steaming time is challenging: insufficient steaming results in inadequate ductility and fracture risks; excessive steaming leads to wrinkling on compressed surfaces. In addition, steaming greatly raises panel moisture content and extends subsequent drying & setting cycles, bringing higher labour and time costs. Large-scale bent panel manufacturers are gradually phasing out this method in favour of high-frequency microwave technology.
High-frequency alternating electric fields drive violent friction among internal water molecules to generate heat, enabling rapid overall plasticization with outstanding forming efficiency. However, this process requires custom dedicated moulds and is more suitable for mass orders of fixed specifications. Frequent mould development for multi-variety, small-batch irregular curved orders will substantially lift production costs and restrict flexible manufacturing capacity.
Targeting pain points of traditional processes – high mould costs and poor customisation flexibility, the industry has launched brand-new CNC circular bending forming technology. It eliminates custom dedicated moulds, delivers stronger adaptability compared with high-frequency hot pressing equipment, and supports both large and small batch production. The machine accommodates a wide range of materials for large and small arc bending: melamine boards, MDF, particle boards, fireproof boards, flexible decorative films and CPL panels, perfectly meeting curved customisation demands for integrated door-wall-cabinet projects.
✅ Uniform heat distribution & fast temperature rise: Equipped with thickened aluminium alloy heat conduction system to ensure even heating and consistent processing effect for fireproof boards and melamine decorative panels.
✅ Adjustable forming parameters: Hot pressing templates support 180° rotation; dwell time at each forming point and preheating range can be freely adjusted to fit processing requirements of different panels.
✅ High compatibility for surface finishes: Compatible with bendable fireproof laminates, melamine impregnated paper, various plastic films and flexible veneer sheets.
✅ Wide cross-industry coverage: Suitable for wrapping and bending of panel furniture, fireproof door panels, door casings, laboratory countertops, sewing machine tables, billiard armrests, rail vehicle interior components and other workpieces.
Curved design has become a mainstream trend in the furniture & decoration sector, raising higher standards for bent panels in processing precision, delivery efficiency and custom flexibility. Three mature forming technologies — steam bending, high-frequency hot pressing and CNC bending — each possess distinctive strengths. Manufacturers may select suitable equipment and processes according to order volume and product portfolio to maximise production capacity and realise cost reduction & efficiency improvement.
